Loot Box

Loot Boxes were a feature of Overwatch, and are a feature in Overwatch 2. They were removed in Season 1 of Overwatch 2[1], then were reimplemented in Season 15: Honor and Glory. Any unopened loot boxes from the original game were automatically opened in players' accounts when logging into Overwatch 2.[2]

Each Loot Box contains four random items, with at least one rare or better item. Loot Boxes and their contents are entirely cosmetic, and do not give any gameplay advantages.

In Overwatch, a Loot Box can be primarily obtained through limited-time events, challenges and progressing the weekly rewards counter, which grants a Loot Box for every 9 matches played, with wins granting double progress. A player can receive a maximum of 3 Loot Boxes through progression every week, completing a total of 27 matches. The Battle Pass also features legendary loot boxes as rewards, both in its free and premium tracks. Loot boxes cannot be purchased with any in-game currency or real money.

To open a Loot Box, either navigate to the main menu and click the "Loot Box" option, or bring up the pause menu and click the "Open Loot Box" button. While opening a Loot Box, players can preview and equip the contents. The items are rolled during the opening animation, reducing the chance of getting duplicate items. However, if a player receives duplicate items, they get bonus progress towards the next Loot Box. When a new season starts, any remaining Loot Boxes are automatically opened on behalf of the player.

In Reign of Talon's Season 1: Conquest, they released a new type of Loot Box: the Esports Loot box. It contains cosmetics that are related to various Overwatch Esports organizations of both past and present, including the Overwatch Champions Series and Overwatch League.

Loot Boxes are guaranteed to have at least one Rare or better item, with an Epic item guaranteed after opening 5 consecutive boxes, and a Legendary item guaranteed after opening 20 consecutive boxes. When one receives an item of Epic or Legendary rarity after opening less than the required amount, their count is reset regardless. Duplicates

Players do not get items they already own, unless they already have all items of that rarity which are obtainable through Loot Boxes. In this case, the player receives a progress towards an additional, normal Loot Box. The progress depends on the rarity of the item.

Overwatch 1

In Overwatch 1, one Loot Box was received for every level gained. Loot boxes could also be earned through limited-time events, playing Arcade game modes and purchased with microtransactions. As opposed to the current scheme, the contents of a Loot Box were determined when the Loot Box was received, not when it was opened.[3] If a Loot Box contained a duplicate cosmetic that the player already owned, they would receive credits instead.

Seasonal Loot Boxes that had already been purchased and unopened remained seasonal Loot Boxes even after the event had ended.
