Samoa — overwatch

Samoa is also a Control map in Overwatch 2. The map released on 10 October 2023 at the start of Season 7, making it the 44th map added to the game.

History

Several decades prior to the Omnic Crisis, Samoa joined with New Zealand, Cook Islands and Hawaii, to the form the Polynesian League. This was in response to the urgent environmental challenges posed by climate change. The League was established as a collaborative effort to address the threats of rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and pollution that particularly impacted the Polynesian nations.

Later, as Polynesia descended into chaos because of the Deepsea Raiders and outside actors, the nations of the league (including Samoa) withdrew from the United Nations and terminated their partnership with Overwatch. With control of Ecopoint Samoa being handed over to the Polynesian League.

Description

Samoa is a new Control map where you’ll fight on a tropical beach, a gleaming city, and inside a volcano! Watch out for deadly pitfalls, or you might just be swimming in lava!^[1]

Trivia

According to an in-game voice line from Mauga, the fishing in Samoa is high quality.
In order to make the map feel more unique, director Aaron Keller assigned each level of the map to a different design team at the same time.^[2]
The inspiration for the map's location came from Aaron Keller's realization that there was no "tropical island" themed map in the game yet.^[2]
There are about 710 breakable barriers across the 3 Samoa levels.
When the point is captured in the Beach level, multiple coconuts drop from the sky around the capture point.
In Downtown and Volcano, you can find 6 different cats hidden around the map.
