The On Fire meter in Overwatch (pre-2022).
On Fire is a visual and audio gameplay element in Overwatch and Overwatch 2 meant to highlight players who are currently performing exceptionally well in a match. Under normal circumstances, it is strictly an indicator of performance and does not grant any gameplay advantages or ultimate charge boosts.[1]
Gameplay
A player's "Fire" state is an indication of their recent combat effectiveness. Players earn "Fire points" by actively contributing to the match. When a player accumulates enough points, they become "On Fire."
When a hero is On Fire, they will announce it to their team via a voice line, and their character portrait will gain a flaming halo. In Overwatch 2, this status is also publicly displayed on the match scoreboard and next to the hero's icon in the Elimination Feed.[2]
Players can gain Fire through various actions, including:
- Eliminations and Assists: Fire is awarded proportionally based on the percentage of damage dealt to the enemy's total health (e.g., dealing 60% of an enemy's maximum health grants 60 Fire points).[1]
- Healing: Grants 1 Fire point for every 5 health points healed.[1]
- Damage Mitigation: Grants 1 Fire point for every 25 damage blocked or absorbed (e.g., Reinhardt's Barrier Field, D.Va's Defense Matrix).
- Objective Play: Capturing objectives, contesting points, or escorting the payload (e.g., 10 Fire points per second for escorting).[1]
- Utility: Boosting damage, saving teammates, applying crowd control, and destroying deployables.
- Extinguishing: Killing an enemy player who is currently On Fire grants bonus Fire points, effectively "stealing" their momentum.[2]
Because Fire points constantly decay over time (historically at a rate of 5 points per second), players must consistently contribute to team fights to maintain their On Fire status. Gaining On Fire has a 3-second internal cooldown.[3]
Blazing
Introduced in Overwatch 2, if a player performs extraordinarily well and continues to rapidly accumulate Fire points beyond the standard threshold, they will reach a higher state known as "Blazing." This is visualized by even larger, more intense flames around the character portrait.[2] Blazing is significantly harder to maintain than regular On Fire, requiring outstanding, continuous play to keep the heat on.
Trivia
- In the original Overwatch, the player's exact Fire state was visualized by a dedicated meter directly underneath their health bar. A player needed 250 points to catch fire, and the meter visually capped at 350 points (though points could accumulate infinitely in the background).[1]
- Time spent On Fire was a tracked statistic in the original game and frequently earned players an end-game Commendation Card for MVP.
- On Fire was not part of the initial release of Overwatch 2. It was removed because all UI elements had to be completely rebuilt for the upgraded game engine. However, the background logic and character voice lines remained active in the game files—even for new heroes released before the system's official return. The system was officially reintroduced in the June 13, 2023 Patch (Season 5), which added the new "Blazing" state and kill feed integration.[2]
- In Overwatch 2, players can customize the color of their On Fire flames. Because the flames are tied to the game's user interface, players can change its appearance by navigating to the Accessibility settings, selecting Color Blindness, opening the Customize UI Colors menu, and changing the "Friendly UI Color." The flames will match whatever color is selected.[4]
- In the Season 17 Arcade mode Hacks & Hijinx (June 2025), a match modifier called "Fired Up" temporarily altered the core mechanics of On Fire. Under this modifier, On Fire heroes gained actual gameplay advantages (decreased cooldowns, increased damage and healing) but were permanently visible to all players.[5]
- Previously, the On Fire system suffered from an audio priority bug since Season 5 in 2023, where generic On Fire voice lines overwrote contextual elimination lines and were severely buffed in playtime. Following extensive community datamining and feedback via channels such as this Overwatch Forums thread since September 2025, the issue was resolved in the April 14, 2026 Patch, reassigning On Fire voice lines to only trigger upon reaching the "Blazing" status.[6]
