      Strategy

This article or section is a stub. You can help Overwatch Wiki by expanding it.

Sojourn can be a difficult hero to play — the more accurate the player's aim, the more effective they're going to be with her railgun, resulting in a high skill ceiling with a lot of power weighted in her railgun’s secondary fire.[5]

      Weapons & Abilities

      • Railgun Icon Railgun: Sojourn’s primary fire is a rapid projectile that generates energy on hit. The energy Sojourn generates from her primary charges up her secondary.
      • Railgun Alt Fire Icon Charged Shot: Sojourn's secondary fire uses energy stored from getting hits from primary fire.
      • Power Slide Icon Power Slide: Rocket-powered slide that can be cancelled into a high leap at any time by jumping. This allows easy repositioning of Sojourn.
      • Disruptor Shot Icon Disruptor Shot: Disruptor Shot is an AOE ability that will eat away their health.
      • Overclock Icon Overclock: Auto-charges Sojourn's Railgun and causes it to pierce enemies.

      Trivia

      Sojourn

      Sojourn

      • Miranda Moyer has drawn comparisons between Sojourn and Ana. Both are the first new heroes released for their respective games, but both have a wealth of pre-established character relationships to draw from.[6]
      • Sojourn's name is a possible reference to the African-American abolitionist Sojourner Truth.
        • It is also a word that means "a temporary stay.".[7] As a former Overwatch field agent, this may be an affectation to her former career of going on missions to exotic places, which technically count as temporary stays.

      Misc. Character Information

      • Sojourn is possibly the one responsible for giving Orisa her weapon. In The Hero of Numbani, when asked about her new weapon, Orisa refers to "she," and tells Efi that they will make "a quick sojourn abroad." Orisa's hero page confirms that Sojourn was indeed the person they were meeting, but does not specify if Sojourn is responsible for Orisa's upgrade.
      • Sojourn is "widely respected" by most of the game's heroes.[6]
      • Sojourn's railgun was described as an "Okoton Kelvin-87 Railgun" by CSIS agent Noah Tremblay in Calling animated short.

      Discrepancies

      • Sojourn's officer status (or lack of it) prior to the Omnic Crisis differs between sources. In her Overwatch 2 hero page, it is stated that Sojourn became an officer before the Omnic Crisis. However, in Overwatch 2: Sojourn, it is established that prior to the war, Sojourn had yet to reach the rank of captain, and is implied not to even have reached the rank of sergeant.
      • Sojourn's age was changed from 47 to 51 in Overwatch 2.[8] The latter roughly syncs with her age in Sojourn.

      Development

      Sojourn concept art

      Sojourn concept art

      Character Development

Sojourn was part of the game's lore by 2014. Development on Sojourn as a hero began this year, or by 2015 at the latest.[9] Visually, the design for Sojourn took inspiration from Angela Bassett and Serena Williams.[10]

Leaked screenshots from Overwatch 2 depicted Sojourn with a maple leaf logo on her left shoulder.[11] During the BlizzCon 2019 Overwatch: What's Next panel, Jeff Kaplan confirmed that Sojourn was Overwatch's first Canadian hero.

      Sojourn 3D beta Portrait

      Sojourn 3D beta Portrait

Sojourn was said to be "right at the center" of the overall plotline of Overwatch 2.[12] It was stated that her introduction would "move the story forward."[10]

Sojourn received her own novel in Overwatch 2: Sojourn. The question of how her disability affected her day-to-day life was among the subjects discussed while it was being developed. One of the considerations for Sojourn was to make disabled individuals feel represented; the idea that there would be a place for them in a hopeful future.[13]

      Gameplay Development

      Sojourn

      Sojourn

When designing Sojourn, the developers looked back at Overwatch and considered what archetypes were missing. They concluded that a railgun-type hero was missing.[14] The developers wanted to make a mid-range hero that rewarded accuracy, but still make it fun for varying levels of skill and gameplay.[5]

Initially, Sojourn's railgun functioned similarly to railguns in other FPS games, with lots of single, high-powered shots. This proved difficult to balance, but the developers liked the gameplay, so the developers changed the gun to having a primary rapid-fire mode, with the single, high-powered shots relegated to its secondary fire.[6]

After the railgun was solidified, the developers began experimenting with Sojourn's other abilities. They wanted her mobility to reflect earlier FPS games with railguns in the past. Sojourn's power slide ability was added early on, and the developers stuck with it.[6] It was added as the developers wanted to add a vertical element to her kit to enable her to quickly access high-ground vantage points and help solidify her role as a mobile damage hero.[5]

Originally, Sojourn's disruptor shot did massive damage to barriers, but the ability was finalized to complement her secondary fire.[5] There was debate as to whether it should be thrown, or come out of her wrist, akin to Pharah's wrist-rocket ability.[6]

Sojourn had a few alternate ultimates before Overclock was settled on. One of them was a massive railgun shot that could penetrate numerous obstacles.[6] Overclock was designed to feel like a hitscan version of Genji's Dragon Blade.[5]

      Sojourn Development Ultimate

At the time of development, the ultimate was through the terrain, similar to Hanzo . But the performance was too powerful, so it was replaced by the current ultimate. It is very similar to the ultimate laser-shaped ultimate in the form of a laser that passes through the terrain.[15]

Sojourn became playable in the Overwatch 2 beta.[16]

      Additional details:
      • Removed in Season 18.
      • The stuck target takes 50% reduced damage from Disruptor Shot.
        • The final tick still deals full damage (potential bug), causing this to reduce the total damage from 280 to 148 instead of 140.
      • 25% of the damage dealt is converted to Railgun energy. This is based on final damage after modifications.
        • As a result, up to 70 energy can be generated from an enemy standing in the area for the full duration or 36 energy from a stuck target.

      Description
These adjustments make Disruptor Shot easier to land and more reliable without increasing its travel distance.

      Disruptor Shot Icon Disruptor Shot

      • Damage per second increased from 80 to 90
      • Projectile speed increased from 30 to 40
      • Maximum travel duration reduced from 1 to 0.75 seconds
Developer Comment: While Sojourn’s win rate is relatively low, she can still feel frustrating to play against. Lowering her health increases her vulnerability, but the slight mobility and primary fire improvements help offset the loss in survivability.
      • Base health reduced from 250 to 225.

      • Hitscan radius large reduced from 0.08 to 0.07 meters.

      • Primary fire shots-per-second reduced from 16 to 15.

      Disruptor Shot Icon Disruptor Shot

      • No longer generates energy.

      Overclock Icon Overclock

      • Energy charge rate reduced from 120 to 100 per second.
Developer Comment: Sojourn has received adjustments to increase the rate of her energy gain and shifted some power into her Disruptor Shot ability recently, though the secondary fire lacking in impact undermines her core gameplay fantasy as "the Railgun hero". We're adding some damage back to it and will keep a close eye on how powerful she ends up being.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Secondary fire damage scaling increased from 1-100 damage to 20-120 damage.
Developer Comments: These Railgun changes swap out the 25 minimum energy it decays to for a longer time before it begins to degenerate which alleviates some of the pressure to quickly use the secondary fire. Disruptor shot is getting a damage increase to helps its effectiveness as an area denial tool, andlong with additional utility through generating a small amount of Railgun energy to make it more broadly useful.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Energy no longer stops degenerating at 25 energy.
      • Time before energy degeneration begins increased from 7 to 12 seconds.

      Disruptor Shot Icon Disruptor Shot

      • Damage per second increased from 60 to 80
      • Now generates 25% of damage done to enemy players as Railgun energy.
Developer Comment: After reducing the maximum damage of the Railgun's secondary fire, we're continuing to look at the effectiveness of Sojourn's primary fire. These changes are to make it more accurate and better reward accuracy by increasing the energy gained from headshots.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Primary fire weapon spread reduced from 2 to 1.6 degrees.
      • Critical hits now grant 10 energy.
      • Energy degeneration rate reduced from 33 to 15 per second after 7 seconds.
Developer Comments: This change is reducing the burst damage potential of the secondary fire Railgun shot to both lessen frustration from playing against that burst damage, and to shift power into her sustained primary fire damage. This should smooth out the feast-or-famine nature of Sojourn consistently hitting the secondary fire shots.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Secondary fire damage scaling reduced from 30-130 damage down to 1-100 damage.
      • Secondary fire projectile no longer requires Overclock to pierce enemy players.
      • Primary fire shots per second increased from 14 to 16.

      Overclock Icon Overclock

      • Energy charge rate increased from 100 to 120 per second.
      General updates
      • Global projectile size modifier for travel time projectiles with a speed greater than 50 meters per second reduced from 0.1 to 0.075 meters.
      General updates

Most damage-dealing projectile sizes have been increased by a new global modifier added to their base size.

      • +0.05 meters for hitscan projectiles with a high rate of fire or spread (e.g., Tracer's Pulse Pistols or Reaper's Hellfire Shotguns).
      • +0.08 meters for hitscan projectiles that are more precise (e.g., Cassidy's Peacekeeper or Soldier:76's Heavy Pulse Rifle).
      • +0.05 meters for travel time projectiles that are shotguns or have a very high rate of fire (e.g., Roadhog's Scrap Gun or Ramattra's Void Accelerator).
      • +0.10 meters for travel time projectile with a speed greater than 50 meters per second (e.g., Zenyatta's Destruction Orb).
      • +0.15 meters for travel time projectile with a speed less than or equal to 50 meters per second (e.g., Pharah's Rocket Launcher).
      • Very large projectiles with a base size greater than 0.5 meters have been excluded from these increases (e.g., Orisa's Energy Javelin or Reinhardt's Fire Strike).

Hero combined HP (base health/armor/shields) increased by 15-25%.

      • 150-175 HP heroes increased by 25 HP.
      • 200-300 HP heroes increased by 50 HP.
      • 300+ HP (Tanks) increased by 75-100 HP.

      • Health increased from 200 to 250.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Secondary Fire base projectile size reduced from 0.1 to 0.07 meters.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Gradual energy no longer decays below 25%.
Developer Comments: We are decreasing the overall spread on the Railgun primary fire to help Sojourn build energy more consistently. The increased shots before reaching maximum spread will give players more direct control over aiming the projectiles when firing in short bursts.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Number of shots to reach maximum spread increased from 8 to 12.
      • Spread reduced by 12%.
Developer Comment: Due to the angle of Sojourn's torso in her default animation stance, her torso hit volume was more difficult to hit compared to similarly sized heroes.
      • Torso hit volume width increased by 20%
Developer comments:The energy gain adjustment will help smooth out Sojourn's average Railgun charge time because it won't benefit as much from critical damage or damage boost abilities. Hitting armored targets or other sources of damage reduction will result in quicker energy gains than before. Previously, damage boosts and critical damage had an amplified effect for Sojourn since it reduced the time to build energy and lowered the threshold at which her Railgun secondary fire became lethal. The reduction to primary fire damage will further slow that down as well.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Energy gain is no longer based on damage done by primary fire. Each primary fire hit against an enemy player now grants 5 energy
      • Primary fire damage per projectile reduced from 10 to 9

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Primary fire spread increased by 28%

      Disruptor Shot Icon Disruptor Shot

      • No longer slows enemy movement

      Power Slide Icon Power Slide

      • Cooldown increased from 6 to 7 seconds
Sojourn is performing well at the highest tiers of competitive play but poorly below those tiers. Much of the perception that she is too powerful seems to be driven by the reaction to dying to long range, charged headshots from her Railgun secondary fire. These changes are aimed at reducing frustrations there, with the biggest change being the reduced critical multiplier for headshots. A fully charged headshot no longer kills a full health 200 hp hero. To help account for this loss of power we're increasing the damage of her primary fire and how quickly her energy charges during her ultimate.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Energy delay before draining reduced from 8 to 5 seconds
      • Primary fire damage per projectile increased from 9 to 10

Railgun Alt Fire Icon Railgun Alt Fire

      • Damage falloff starting range reduced from 70 to 40 meters
      • Critical damage multiplier reduced from 2 to 1.5
      • Damage now scales linearly with energy from 30 to 130 damage (1 energy converts to 1 damage added)
      • Overclock energy charge rate increased by 20%

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Energy gain from non-player targets (barriers, turrets, etc.) reduced by an additional 50%

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Fire rate reduced from 15 to 14 shots per second

Railgun Alt Fire Icon Railgun Alt Fire

      • Projectile radius now scales with energy level from 0 up to the previous 0.1 meters
        • The higher the energy level, the bigger the projectile radius
Sojourn has been a little weak since her initial addition to the roster. While this change doesn’t seem huge, increasing her rate of fire increases her alternate fire charge rate and ultimate gain, as well as purely increasing her primary fire’s raw DPS. Whenever a weapon’s rate of fire changes, it also changes how quickly the weapon will drain its magazine and run out of ammo. We’re increasing her ammo count to compensate for this.

      Railgun Icon Railgun

      • Railgun primary rate of fire increased from 13 to 15 shots-per-second
      • Railgun maximum ammo increased from 40 to 45
We saw a lot of players at varying skill levels struggling to land shots with her Alt Fire, so we are making the projectile width wider. Sojourn is all about mobility, and we wanted her to move around the maps more freely. We think this will help increase her effectiveness and make her even more fun to play.

      Patch
      Description
Sojourn’s builds have been feeling a little too expensive for how quickly Stadium matches move, especially when trying to piece together early and mid game power spikes. Across these weapon, ability, and survival items, we’re lowering costs to smooth out her build progression and reduce the friction of committing to specific playstyles. The goal here is simple: get Sojourn online sooner, let her experiment with more item paths, and make sure she’s spending more time sliding, shooting, and railgunning than staring at the Armory wondering where all her currency went.

Sojourn’s Disruptor Shot build was too costly for the payoff it provided, making it hard to justify in most matches. We’ve reduced the build’s overall expense and improved her defensive options through Power Slide buffs, giving her more flexibility to reposition and stay in the fight longer.
