Sojourn is a Sharpshooter Damage hero in Overwatch.[4] She was initially playable during the first Overwatch 2 PvP Beta on 26 April 2022, before becoming permanently available to play when the full game launched on 4 October 2022, making her the 33rd hero to be added to the game.
Overview
As a former Overwatch Captain, Sojourn fields abilities designed to plan, lead, and execute strikes on her opposition. Sojourn offers a unique mid-range gameplay experience and a kit packed with some incredible mobility and artillery.[5]

Abilities
Passive Abilities
- Critical hits will grant cooldown reduction to Movement Abilities based on 0.75% of damage dealt.
Weapons
10 (critical hit)
1 (deployable hit)
15 per second (decay rate)
0.64 degrees (horizontal, max)
- Damage per second: 144 while firing (~100.93 overall w/reload)
- Each projectile hit generates 5 energy against heroes and 1 energy against objects, such as barriers and turrets.
- Critical hits against heroes grant 10 energy instead of 5.
- The amount of energy gained is unaffected by damage modifiers (amplifications, reductions).
- Maximum spread is reached after 12 shots.
- Spread is 2.5x more vertical than it is horizontal.
21 - 10.5 (min charge)
- Can be charged up to a maximum of 100 energy but can be fired with at least 1 energy charge.
- Damage scales with the amount of stored energy.
- Damage increase is linear, with each point of energy increasing damage by 1.
- After 9 seconds without gaining energy, Sojourn's secondary fire energy will begin decaying at a rate of 15 per second.
Special Abilities
11.7 meters (jump)
+280% (slide, in air)
+273% (jump, horizontal)
- Sojourn can fire and use abilities while sliding and leaping.
- The initial slide part can be activated mid-air, but the jump cancel may only be used when Sojourn is on a walkable surface.
- Power Slide's movement speed buff does not count towards global movement speed buff cap.
- Destroys fences and other breakables in the way when sliding along ground, but not while leaping.
Area of effect
315 total
- The projectile turns into a stationary AoE that deals periodic damage, upon colliding with an enemy hero or object.
- The projectile is blocked by barriers, turning into an AoE upon contact, but the AoE pierces barriers.
- Periodic damage ignores damage reduction from armor.
- The projectile can be destroyed by Defense Matrix, Kinetic Grasp, Javelin Spin, Power Matrix and Kekkai Sanctuary and reflected by Deflect before it lands and turns into an AoE.
Ultimate Ability
- Damage per second: 120 (fired at max charge), 130.49 (fired immediately on recovery)
- Railgun starts charging immediately as Overclock is activated, but there is a short delay before it can be first fired.
Perks
Minor Perks
A Minor Perk can be chosen at level 2.
- Slow ends as soon as the target leaves the area.
- Charging to 150% increases Railgun's alt fire max damage from 120 to 170 (255 for headshots).
Major perks
A Major Perk can be chosen at level 3.
Strategy
Sojourn can be a difficult hero to play — the more accurate the player's aim, the more effective they're going to be with her railgun, resulting in a high skill ceiling with a lot of power weighted in her railgun’s secondary fire.[5]
Weapons & Abilities
- Railgun: Sojourn’s primary fire is a rapid projectile that generates energy on hit. The energy Sojourn generates from her primary charges up her secondary.
- Charged Shot: Sojourn's secondary fire uses energy stored from getting hits from primary fire.
- Power Slide: Rocket-powered slide that can be cancelled into a high leap at any time by jumping. This allows easy repositioning of Sojourn.
- Disruptor Shot: Disruptor Shot is an AOE ability that will eat away their health.
- Overclock: Auto-charges Sojourn's Railgun and causes it to pierce enemies.

Trivia
Sojourn
- Miranda Moyer has drawn comparisons between Sojourn and Ana. Both are the first new heroes released for their respective games, but both have a wealth of pre-established character relationships to draw from.[6]
- Sojourn's name is a possible reference to the African-American abolitionist Sojourner Truth.
- It is also a word that means "a temporary stay.".[7] As a former Overwatch field agent, this may be an affectation to her former career of going on missions to exotic places, which technically count as temporary stays.
Misc. Character Information
- Sojourn is possibly the one responsible for giving Orisa her weapon. In The Hero of Numbani, when asked about her new weapon, Orisa refers to "she," and tells Efi that they will make "a quick sojourn abroad." Orisa's hero page confirms that Sojourn was indeed the person they were meeting, but does not specify if Sojourn is responsible for Orisa's upgrade.
- Sojourn is "widely respected" by most of the game's heroes.[6]
- Sojourn's railgun was described as an "Okoton Kelvin-87 Railgun" by CSIS agent Noah Tremblay in Calling animated short.
Discrepancies
- Sojourn's officer status (or lack of it) prior to the Omnic Crisis differs between sources. In her Overwatch 2 hero page, it is stated that Sojourn became an officer before the Omnic Crisis. However, in Overwatch 2: Sojourn, it is established that prior to the war, Sojourn had yet to reach the rank of captain, and is implied not to even have reached the rank of sergeant.
- Sojourn's age was changed from 47 to 51 in Overwatch 2.[8] The latter roughly syncs with her age in Sojourn.
Development
Sojourn concept art
Character Development
Sojourn was part of the game's lore by 2014. Development on Sojourn as a hero began this year, or by 2015 at the latest.[9] Visually, the design for Sojourn took inspiration from Angela Bassett and Serena Williams.[10]
Leaked screenshots from Overwatch 2 depicted Sojourn with a maple leaf logo on her left shoulder.[11] During the BlizzCon 2019 Overwatch: What's Next panel, Jeff Kaplan confirmed that Sojourn was Overwatch's first Canadian hero.
Sojourn 3D beta Portrait
Sojourn was said to be "right at the center" of the overall plotline of Overwatch 2.[12] It was stated that her introduction would "move the story forward."[10]
Sojourn received her own novel in Overwatch 2: Sojourn. The question of how her disability affected her day-to-day life was among the subjects discussed while it was being developed. One of the considerations for Sojourn was to make disabled individuals feel represented; the idea that there would be a place for them in a hopeful future.[13]
Gameplay Development
Sojourn
When designing Sojourn, the developers looked back at Overwatch and considered what archetypes were missing. They concluded that a railgun-type hero was missing.[14] The developers wanted to make a mid-range hero that rewarded accuracy, but still make it fun for varying levels of skill and gameplay.[5]
Initially, Sojourn's railgun functioned similarly to railguns in other FPS games, with lots of single, high-powered shots. This proved difficult to balance, but the developers liked the gameplay, so the developers changed the gun to having a primary rapid-fire mode, with the single, high-powered shots relegated to its secondary fire.[6]
After the railgun was solidified, the developers began experimenting with Sojourn's other abilities. They wanted her mobility to reflect earlier FPS games with railguns in the past. Sojourn's power slide ability was added early on, and the developers stuck with it.[6] It was added as the developers wanted to add a vertical element to her kit to enable her to quickly access high-ground vantage points and help solidify her role as a mobile damage hero.[5]
Originally, Sojourn's disruptor shot did massive damage to barriers, but the ability was finalized to complement her secondary fire.[5] There was debate as to whether it should be thrown, or come out of her wrist, akin to Pharah's wrist-rocket ability.[6]
Sojourn had a few alternate ultimates before Overclock was settled on. One of them was a massive railgun shot that could penetrate numerous obstacles.[6] Overclock was designed to feel like a hitscan version of Genji's Dragon Blade.[5]

At the time of development, the ultimate was through the terrain, similar to Hanzo . But the performance was too powerful, so it was replaced by the current ultimate. It is very similar to the ultimate laser-shaped ultimate in the form of a laser that passes through the terrain.[15]
Sojourn became playable in the Overwatch 2 beta.[16]
Removed abilities
- Removed in Season 18.
- Removed in Season 18.
- The stuck target takes 50% reduced damage from Disruptor Shot.
- The final tick still deals full damage (potential bug), causing this to reduce the total damage from 280 to 148 instead of 140.
- 25% of the damage dealt is converted to Railgun energy. This is based on final damage after modifications.
- As a result, up to 70 energy can be generated from an enemy standing in the area for the full duration or 36 energy from a stuck target.
