Status effects are conditions that affect the target for a short period of time. These effects are inflicted usually by abilities, but can also be applied by weapons. Weapon and ability effects may also be a combination of multiple status effects.

Positive effects[]

Positive status effects are usually applied by allies or the hero themself.

Unstoppable[]

Ignores Displace, Hacked, Hinder, Knockback, Sleep, Stun and Tether.

Unstoppable is a status effect that makes the hero immune to any effects that impair the hero's ability to move freely or use their abilities. An Unstoppable hero can still be damaged and affected by other debuffs, such as damage over time effects, anti-heal or Zenyatta's Ability-zenyatta3 Orb of Discord.

Invulnerable[]

Cannot be damaged. Contests objectives, but does not capture them.

Invulnerable (or "invincible" in Workshop) is a status effect that makes the target immune to damage. The attacks will still hit the target, but their damage is negated. Becoming Invulnerable also prevents (but doesn't remove) STUNPrevents a hero from taking actions, interrupts Channeled abilities and is removed by Greater Cleanse., KNOCKDOWNA Stun that cannot be Cleansed. Knocked down targets do not block movement. and SLEEPA Knockdown that's interrupted by taking damage and can be Cleansed.. Most abilities that grant Invulnerable also apply perfect cleanse, GREATER CLEANSERemoves Cleansable status effects and Stuns. Ignored by Knockdown and Displace. or LESSER CLEANSERemoves Cleansable status effects. Ignored by Stun, Knockdown, and Displace., but by default it has no effect on other negative status effects. Heroes that are invulnerable usually cannot capture objectives, but they are still able to contest them.

Bubble[]

A Barrier that absorbs all damage and prevents most crowd control until it breaks.

Bubble grants the target a BARRIERA physical construct with health that absorbs most ranged attacks and abilities but does not block hero movement. Pierced by Melee. that completely surrounds them and makes them INVULNERABLECannot be damaged. Contests objectives, but does not capture them. until it breaks. Like regular Barriers, a Bubble will also block in full the damage instance that broke it, unless the ability has the SUNDERIgnores Damage Reduction, destroys Overhealth before dealing damage, and deals full damage to Bubbled heroes if the Bubble is destroyed. property. Phased[]

An Evasive ability that causes all attacks pass through the hero. Removes Sticky Abilities.

Phased (or "phased out" in Workshop) removes STICKYProjectile attacks that stick to enemy heroes and Barriers. Removed by Phased. projectiles and causes the affected hero to pass through other players and become unable to be hit by enemy attacks. Phased by itself does not remove other negative effects, but its attack ignoring property prevents most negative effects from applying and it is always accompanied by INVULNERABLECannot be damaged. Contests objectives, but does not capture them. status, preventing damage over time effects from ticking and removing slows on activation. Most abilities that grant Phased also apply GREATER CLEANSERemoves Cleansable status effects and Stuns. Ignored by Knockdown and Displace. or LESSER CLEANSERemoves Cleansable status effects. Cleanse[]

Cleanse is an effect that can remove various negative status effects. Cleansing effects are divided to Perfect, Greater and Lesser Cleanse, with the key difference that Greater Cleanse is capable of removing Stuns and Perfect Cleanses removes everything. Abilities that can be removed with Cleanses are marked with CLEANSABLEApplies a negative status effect that can be removed by Cleanse. keyword. Generally, this includes abilities that apply damage over time, Burning, Hacked, Sleep or Slowed. Abilities that apply Hinder or Tether can generally only be removed if marked Cleansable, and Cleanses never remove Displace, Knockdown, Knockback and Immobilize effects.

Negative effects[]

Negative status effects are harmful effects, usually applied by enemies or in some cases by the hero themself. Negative status effects that limit the hero's ability to move, shoot or use their abilities, are colloquially referred to as "crowd control" by players. Abilities that apply negative status effects can be credited for environmental kills, if they cause a player to fall of the map.

Slowed[]

Slowed is a negative status effect that reduces the target's movement speed. The strengths of slowing effects caused by enemies stack additionally with each other and movement speed buffs. Self-inflicted movement speed penalties, however do not stack with other slowing effects. Instead, the greatest slowing effect of the two will take effect. Some movement abilities are unaffected by slows.

Stunned[]

Prevents a hero from taking actions, interrupts Channeled abilities and is removed by Greater Cleanse.

Stunned is a negative status effect that completely prevents the player from controlling their hero. Stunned heroes are unable to move, shoot, aim or use their abilities. Additionally, getting stunned will interrupt movement abilities and abilities that have a short cast animation or are channeled, usually negating the ability and putting it on full cooldown.

Displace[]

Displace
Prevents a hero from taking actions while moving them, interrupts Channeled abilities, and is not Cleansable.

Displace is a stun effect that simultaneously moves the target and cannot be Cleansed. Displaces can be prevented by Phased and Unstoppable and can only be removed by Lifeweaver's Life Grip Icon Life Grip and Sombra's Ability Sombra Translocator Translocator.

Knockdown[]

A Stun that cannot be Cleansed. Knocked down targets do not block movement.

Knocked down has the same effect to the target hero as stunned, but it also causes the hero to fall and lie on ground face up. In the last 0.5 seconds of the duration, the target will enter a wake up animation where they start to stand up.

Sleep[]

A Knockdown that's interrupted by taking damage and can be Cleansed.

Sleep (or "Asleep" in Workshop) has a similar effect to knocked down, except the target will instantly start the wake up animation when they take damage. Sleep can also be cleansed, unlike Knockdown. The only ability that currently causes sleep is Ana's Ability-ana2 Sleep Dart.

Hinder[]

Silences Movement abilities.

Hinder is a status that disables the hero's movement abilities, including passive abilities that grant movement. It prevents the affected player from activating movement abilities and immediately ends any active movement abilities. The affected hero can still aim, shoot, jump, crouch and use any non-movement abilities as normal and be moved by objects, such as Petal Platform Icon Petal Platform or Ability-symmetra4 Teleporter. Movement speed buffs generally do not count as movement abilities, unless it the only effect provided by the ability. Hindre does not immediately end movement abilities that grant free flight, but will still prevent the flight for the duration.

Hinder can be removed by Cleanse if the ability is marked as cleansable, otherwise it can only be removed by Lifeweaver's Life Grip Icon Life Grip and Orisa's Ability Orisa Fortify Fortify and Ultimate TerraSurge Terra Surge. Mauga's Overrun icon Overrun also prevents the effect, but as it is also a movement ability, it cannot be used to remove it. Some hinder abilities may be prevented by being phased while about to be hit by it.

Hacked[]

Hacked makes the hero unable to use their abilities. This includes all normal and ultimate abilities and certain passive abilities. Similarly to getting stunned, hacked will also interrupt movement abilities and abilities that have a short cast animation or are channeled, usually negating the ability and putting it on full cooldown. Hacked heroes can still use their weapon (both primary and secondary fire) and move normally.

The only abilities that currently cause hacked are Sombra's Ability Sombra Hack Hack and Ability Sombra EMP EMP.

Revealed[]

Revealed heroes can be seen through walls by the enemy who reveals them, and usually their team.

Reveal also causes Sombra to be seen during stealth, indicated by the "REVEALED" message shown at the top of her screen.

Some abilities don't directly reveal enemies but still allow the player to see their position through walls and obstacles, such as Ability-mccree4 Deadeye after locking onto an enemy, Jagged Blade Icon Jagged Blade after sticking to a target, and Ability-zenyatta3 Orb of Discord.

Discord[]

Discord causes the player to have the "Ability-zenyatta3 Orb of Discord from Zenyatta" alert. Player afflicted with it will take 30% increased damage from all damage sources.

Damage over time[]

Damage over time effect causes the hero to periodically take a small amounts of damage without further interaction from the hero that applied the effect and regardless of the position of the target hero. As such, beam effects and abilities that create an area that deals periodic damage, such as Disruptor Shot Icon Disruptor Shot, do not count as damage over time effects. Damage over time effects can be removed by abilities that apply Cleanse (either GREATER CLEANSERemoves Cleansable status effects and Stuns. Ignored by Knockdown and Displace., such as Kiriko's Protection Suzu Icon Protection Suzu, or LESSER CLEANSERemoves Cleansable status effects. Ignored by Stun, Knockdown, and Displace. such as Zarya's Ability-zarya2 Particle Barrier or Ability-zarya3 Projected Barrier,) or by collecting a health pack. INVULNERABLECannot be damaged. Contests objectives, but does not capture them. status does not remove damage over time effects, but can temporarily prevent them from dealing damage. Burning[]

Applies a Cleansable negative status effect that ignores armor and deals damage over time.

Burning is a status effect that comes with some damage over time effects. Targets that are burning have a specific interaction with certain abilities. Mauga's Volatile Chaingun icon Volatile Chaingun deals critical damage to burning targets, and Anran's Fan the Flames Fan the Flames amplifies the burn damage of any burning target. Applying multiple Burns onto one target causes them to stack additively.

Anti-heal[]

Anti-heal prevents the target hero from receiving any healing. Healing projectiles will still collide with heroes affected by anti-heal, but any healing provided by them will be negated. Heroes affected by anti-heal also cannot pick up health packs.

Captive Sun mark[]

Captive Sun mark is an effect specific to Illari's Captive sun icon Captive Sun. Each player having this effect is slowed for the duration of it and will explode after a few shots, becoming Sunstruck and taking high damage and also damaging all nearby allies. This effect is chained and will cause Sunstruck across multiple targets if more than one of them are in close range and affected with it and just one of them takes damage.
